They Came In

I was thinking this morning about Rahab, and how she was a Canaanite living there in Jericho. She certainly wasn’t a good little church girl, after all she is remembered in almost every passage of scripture as Rahab the harlot Matthew 1:5 is the exception (this is the geneaology leading up to Jesus.

And I got to thinking specifically about the two men who cut a deal with her. That if she wouldn’t tell anyone about them they would promise to spare anyone who they found in her house when the Israelites attacked Jericho. And Joshua honored this agreement.

Let me pause right here to say this, Moses was a type of the law and Joshua is a type of Jesus. The law (hence Moses) couldn’t bring the people over to the other side, but Joshua, the type for Jesus, could and did bring the people over. The thing is this, Gos had given a commandment concerning the Canaanites, that they were to all be killed. The people weren’t to make any peace treaties with them, no inter-marrying between the Israelites and the Canaanites, and no cutting any deals with them. The Canaanites were living under a death sentence. And yet God not only allowed for this deal to stand, but he made sure the section of wall that Rahab’s house was built on top of stood (Joshua 2:15, 6:22). The Israelites may have marched around the city as God had commanded them, the wall may have come tumbling down as the kids sing about today, but God was the one who knocked the wall down; so only He could keep a portion of the wall intact as well.

About that death sentence thing, back in Genesis 15:16 God told Abraham that the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. But 400 years or so later it was. How could God order the genocide of so many people? Well, Isaiah tells us in 6:3 that God is a trice HOLY God. Such pure righteousness cannot abide such sin He didn’t do this just for the sheer fun of it. Yet God still was willing to show compassion. You see the israelites had already spent 40 years on the other side of the Jordan River waiting for their punishment for unbelief to come to an end.

That was an extra 40 years that these people had to get right with God and yet they refused. Instead of trying to get right with God they built up their defenses, made up excuses why they couldn’t seek God’s forgiveness. Everyone in town, but one harlot that is. She told the spies that she had heard the stories of Israel’s exploits on their way to Canaan and how the people had felt they were doomed and should have already been destroyed (Joshua 2:9-11). Her asking for safety for her and her fathers hoouse was an act of true faith. This woman had no reason whatsoever to think they would accept her request.

This is like the lost person who hears the gospel and hardens their heart to it. The more they hear the more they reject God’s truth.

Why did God honor this deal? It goes back to the types that Moses and Joshua are of. The Canaanites who were living under the death sentence are types of every person who has ever been born on this planet. We all have basically the same death sentence placed on us, the same one that Adam had placed on him the day he ate of the forbidden fruit. Adam knew not to eat and still did anyway.

Those two spies however, THEY CAME IN. We don’t know their names but can I say what I think their names translate into. The one, his name means GRACE and the other, his name means MERCY. They came in, grace and mercy came in! Jesus being typified by Joshua sent them in to rescue all who had accepted the invitation, the deal, the same bargain that Jesus himself spoke of in John 3:16 “whosoever believeth in him should not perish”. We were all under the death sentence, for there is none righteous no not one (Romans 3:10) For the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). But God cut a deal that he didn’t have to.

In fact those two spies didn’t have to cut a deal with Rahab either. As soon as the soldiers left they could have cut her throat effortlessly. She was a Canaanite and was supposed to die anyway and no one would have been the wiser. They had what they needed but Grace and Mercy were on the scene.

Let me ask you this right now, has Grace and Mercy come into your life and have you accepted the offer? If not right now is the perfect time to ask Jesus to come into your life and save your soul from eternity in HELL.
