Why was there no room?

Luke 2: 7 “And she brought forth her first born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”
We know that Caesar had decreed that all the Roman world was to be tax and that it required every man to travel to the city of his birth to be properly documented (1:1-3). Of course this unbeknownst to Caesar played right into prophecy about the coming King being born in Bethlehem. So it is understandable that little Bethlehem would be over run with travelers, both those passing through on their way home or to their city and those who had arrived in Bethlehem to be taxed just lie Joseph and Mary were doing.
That this sudden swelling of the population would cause a shortage of rooms is understandable as well. What I would like for you to consider at the moment was why was there no room in the inn at this precise moment. Were Joseph and Mary late arriving? Perhaps because someone forgot to turn the oven off at home and they had to backtrack to take care of it? Did the ball game go into over time causing a late start? Maybe they overslept or she spent too long getting her hair done after trying on a dozen outfits to see which one looked best to travel in?
(Those were meant to be humorous.)
I would like to submit a different possibility. Could it be when they arrived that the inn keepers had realized the law of supply and demand was going to mean a fortune to them? That over the next few days or weeks they could charge however much they wanted because rooms were now at a premium? Is it possible that this poor couple from Nazareth had enough money to pay their taxes, buy food and rent a room at the previous price but not at an inflated rate? Matthew 6:21 “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Greed could easily have put the couple outside for the night.
My question for you is this, is there room in your heart for Jesus? Is He the treasure of your life or is there something else that will one day put you out of Heaven?
