Living accommodations

Joshua 24:15 “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
How we choose to serve God is also going to dictate some of our living accommodations. Before a person is saved they can’t truly serve God, they can only go through the motions. Why is that? Because they are in total bondage to sin which is represented in this verse by the gods that were on the “other side of the flood” meaning back in Egypt. Egypt has always represented the world and sin in the Bible. There the people were slaves, some wanted to be free and some were content because they at least knew the score, Numbers 11:5 “We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely, the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick”. Doesn’t matter if they got to have any of that stuff, let alone “freely” that was what they just knew to be the case. The world just knows they got it made. There are a great many rich people out there and many very poor people, many religious people and many atheists, but without Jesus in their heart they are all just existing in this world and will one day be dying forever in the Lake of Fire.
Our next group in our text are those who are willing to serve the gods of the people who were there in the promised land. Let me just say that those gods were already proven failures as that they could not stop the children of Israel from coming in and taking the land. These people represent those who are saved, blood bought, and born again yet they have gotten tangled up with this world. One way or another they are living for the cares of this life, be it an addiction, job, money, affairs, etc. Saved but not living it. They “say” they are saved but don’t act like it (Amorite means: a sayer or publicity). These people are in danger because God promised in Hebrews 12:5-13 to chastise His children.
Lastly are those who are consciously living for the Lord. They have chosen to do the things for Him that He desires. The convenient excuses have been left in the past. Their desire to live pleasing lives for Jesus is overlooking those things that wish to be roadblocks. Money and position in this life means little, they seek to hear Him say well done thou good and faithful servant (Matthew 25:21).
Today is the first day of the new year, we can let it be symbolic of our determination to be the first day of our submission to living for Jesus, His way.
