Breastplate of Righteousness

Ephesians 6:14b “and having on the breastplate of righteousness.”

Would you please note that it is called the breastplate of Righteousness and not the vest of righteousness. A vest covers both front and back. While the breastplate on protects the chest. The reason being that the only reason for protecting your back was that you had turned to run away from the raging battle. Cowards need not apply. The chest needed protection because the soldier was expected to be pushing forward and winning.
This righteousness is also not our own. Because our righteousness is nothing better than filthy rags, Isaiah 64:6.
No, this is the righteousness that Jesus gives us when we are saved. It is sure and dependable. No sin of this world can stain it; we simply need to confess those sins and God will clean us up, 1 John 1:9.
We will have times when we turn our backs and we will pay a price for it but God does already know this and yet He still loves us.
The breastplate is meant to cover the vital organs especially the heart. That is for 2 reasons: 1. the heart is desperately wicked and not to be followed (Jeremiah 17:9) only God should be followed. 2. we easily get our feelings hurt and want to quit because of it. If God left us exposed like that those original disciples would have kept on running and never come back and none of us would have ever heard the gospel. With that in mind if it was our righteousness we were using not only would we turn our backs on God when we got our feelings hurt but we would also be striving to warn others to stay away from Jesus because they would get hurt too.
Make no mistake about it, we are in a spiritual war and our enemy will use any means necessary to beat us up and throw us away. God however longs to fully equip us. Will you let Him?
