The Right NOT to Walk

Years ago there was a movie called Dead Poet Society. In one scene the English teacher took his students outside in an exercise to learn to think for themselves. He took three of the boys and had them start walking around the courtyard. Soon the rest of the class began to clap a beat and the 3 fell into unison with each other and the beat. Once done the teacher explained what he had observed about their walking styles and then how they fell into line with the beat. Then he instructed all the class to begin walking, and to do it their way. Some took it seriously while others acted as silly as they could. One young man however just stood there, leaning against the wall. Seeing him the teacher asked why he wasn’t walking. The student replied that he was exercising his right not to walk. Quickly the teacher thanked him for illustrating his point of the exercise.
Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” It is our spiritual right to not walk after the way of this world. We are in it, and must abide by certain rules, but not those that stand against God. Yes, we will sin (because we are still human) but we are not to actively pursue, practice, or plan to sin.
